New "International" Airport in Tulum, Mexico

There is a NEW airport for Tulum called Felipe Carrillo Puerto International with ICAO code of MMTL. However.....

There has always been an airport in Tulum with the code of MMTU, the runway is 6,000 ft long. This runway is about 10 NM to the north of MMTL. Please do not confuse the two airports as MMTU is military only.

There has always been a non-towered airport by the name of Felipe Carrillo Puerto with the code FCQ which is about 15 Nm to the south of MMTL. Please do not confuse that one for MMTL.

While the name of the new MMTL airport has "International" in it, the airport is open ONLY to domestic flights. If you file an international flight plan to MMTL, it will most likely be rejected by Merida Center, the controlling agency. You cannot make an international departure from MMTL either. International operations are not planned to commence until the end of March, 2024.

MMTL is IFR, not VFR as has been reported, and has two RNP (GNSS) approaches. Cancun Approach has confirmed to us that these approaches are in use. They do not yet have a VOR nor ILS active.

The fuel farm in MMTL is not yet working. They are bringing Jet-A in tanker trucks from the Cancun airport (MMUN) and the priority is being given to the airlines. If you are planning a domestic flight to MMTL, we recommend that you consider tankering fuel as you may find Jet-A unavailable. There is no AVGAS at MMTL for now.

There is no ground support equipment for private aircraft at MMTL so plan accordingly as you will need to be completely self-sufficient:

    No tugs nor towbars
    No GPUs
    No LAV service
    No Potable water

Please take note of this information for your planning purposes.

The location of this airport will become strategically important as there are many new, exclusive resorts being built in the Tulum area and the new airport lies just outside the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve on the Riviera Maya. Cancun has become increasingly less friendly to General Aviation and constantly publishes NOTAM’s restricting General Aviation fixed wing operations (turbine included). As this new airport comes online, it will most certainly become a popular destination for GA.

I look forward to taking the Phenom down to this new airport, but I definitely don't want to be the guinea pig. I'd like to hear some favorable pireps first!
