My new plane has the capability for CPLDC. Need to know if you have to subscribe to Garmin data comm plan to make it work. I have both FAA and the L3 data was filed. It’s also approved for ATN in Europe. Very little guidance that I can find.

If you need help with setting up the ATN, then let me know and I can talk you through the process. Its a little bit fiddly to start, but once up and running its pretty easy to do. -

01-15-2025, 09:51 PM #3Yes on Garmin Data Comm plan, as (Username Protected) said. Easy to manage with Garmin / hands off once enacted. Have used CPDLC / ATN - on the way through Canada / Iceland, and into Europe (ATN). Kind of a seamless transition from one to the other when coasting into Europe mainland (CPDLC to ATN). OJT searching for the correct ATN address once in Europe, but not hard to figure out. I don't recall ever being asked by Euro ATC to sign into an ATN network, though we usually were already synched. When synched to a network, ATC used it - big fan, works great (except for, in my opinion, the exceptionally loud "MESSAGE" aural tone you get every time you are sent a message from ATC - it'll get your attention...)
Hardest part of CPDLC was working the A-056 LOA with the local FSDO. Our FSDO was not as familiar with the P300 data comm integration and had not done one before. In the end, our A-056 LOA limits en-route CPDLC usage to non-domestic flights (Europe only). Not exactly sure why, but the capability is not required in the US, so no factor. Cleared to use PDC as desired - works great, though feels uneasy to not read back a clearance prior to take off.
Happy to help if you have any more questions. Have a few pictures and coordination data / details with our FSDO. There's also another post on here that talks through CPDLC / ATN usage for a trip through Europe.
