Monterrey, MX-Del Norte Airport (MMAN) Changes

News reports over the last couple of days indicate that the Mexican Federal government will not renew the airport concession for the Monterrey-Del Norte Airport (MMAN) which ONLY provides service to General Aviation aircraft and is by far the best airport for General Aviation flights to Monterrey, Mexico. The concession expires on August 12 of this year.

While nothing has yet been published by the Mexican Federal Government officially, our contacts at MMAN believe that the news reports are correct and the concession will not be renewed. If these reports are in fact correct, there is a likelihood that the Mexican Federal Government will continue with its demonstrated practice of handling over the country's asset to the military. In the case of airports, the precedent has been that the management of the Chetumal Intl Airport (MMCM), Palenque (MMPQ) and the new airport in Tulum under construction (ZZZZ) have all been handed over to the Mexican military. The Mexican Federal Government is also proceeding with a new airline owned by the government and operated by the Mexican military.

If the concession of MMAN is in fact handed over to the Mexican military, then we will have to wait and see how it plays out with the permits granted to the present FBOs at MMAN and the internal operational procedures of the airport to determine if this will in any measurable way impact the operations of General Aviation aircraft (both Mexican and foreign) at that airport.
