Any other Legacy / Praetor Pilots here?
Hi all -
I'm reaching out to see if there are any other EMB-550 pilots / owners / operators here and active? I am a former Phenom 300 driver, now flying a Praetor 500, N808PD. Would love to connect with others.

Great to hear from you, (Username Protected). We last touched base a year or so ago when you were trying to get some answers out of Collins. I'm in that same state now about a CPDLC enroute issue....same experience! It's nice to see a small group of us pop up here...hopefully we can drag in a few more. I'd value chance to chat about a few Legacy/Praetor things with other pilots.

01-11-2023, 04:59 PM #5Who is your datalink provider? I use Honeywell. In the beginning of my operations my box had the wrong data in there, and would not connect the CPDLC, we had to have Maintenance reprogram the default settings,

I use Satcom Direct, and they have been great actually. The challenge I've had with Collins has come because L3Harris recently reached out to me about enroute CPDLC in KUSA, and said I needed to change my Line 18 filing string from 1FANSE to 1FANSER because of newly discovered a deficiency in the way the Collins is able to load reroutes. They said that Collins would be able to provide full information about the problem and possible future fix. So far, Collins via direct contact and via my Collins FSR have been entirely unhelpful. Not the biggest issue in the world, but super frustrating when they don't engage.

Fresh out of initial, typed with HUD/EFVS add-on. Great airplane and great training at FlightSafety by the way. Was a Phenom driver before the Praetor as well. Based in TN.

FSI does EMB-550 type training in Dallas, St Louis, and Orlando. STL was the original program base but seems to have lost staff and energy. Orlando is the newest, and is said to have a new “better” sim.

New 500 in the hangar!
Just got our new (Username Protected) home to BNA! This was my 5th delivery and went really good with Embraer this time. Minor buybacks and squawks that were addressed quick and got us on our way. Really awesome folks working down in Melbourne, shout out to the friends I’ve made over the years.
We are operating single full time crew with contract on the second pilot so I’d appreciate any connections made. Reach out anytime text/call, I’ll be in need of some close by Praetor drivers and I’m also available for contract if anyone needs it. Always happy to help in any role!

I am interested in Praetor pilots or owners on the satisfaction of the airplanes plus’s and minus’s. Any issues with parts or breakdowns etc. What comparisons to other airplanes in the same category and how does it stack up.

11-30-2024, 10:33 AM #17Hi (Username Protected), It's a great aircraft. Do you currently operate a Phenom? Are you thinking about moving up to the Praetor? If you feel like talking about the Legacy/Praetor aircraft, feel free to give me a call. I have operated the legacy/Praetor 450/500/600 since 2015. Phenom 300 since 2010. 817.946.0012

Yes I do as a pilot. I have had some issues with parts. Did not know if other brands such as Citation or Challengers have had the same issue. My brother is interested in a Praetor. He has owned a Challenger in the past

Hi (Username Protected), I have owned, operated, and piloted a Praetor 500 for last 3 years, Phenom 300 before that. We have had some challenges with reliability and parts from time to time, but the parts situation is very improving.
Glad to answer any more questions if I can be helpful. -

12-05-2024, 04:51 AM #20(Username Protected) - I got a new Praetor back in September.
I've had some issues, but nothing causing an AOG.
1. Defective gear spring needed to be replaced. (There was a bad batch from the manufacturer so Embraer issued a recall).
2. XM weather not working. Need to get the aircraft back into the USA to get this fixed. I've had this problem on all of my aircraft (Phenom 300, Cirrus, and Praetor) and has required a hardware swap.
3. I had a FLT CONTROL NO DISPATCH error. This was at a very windy airport and happened multiple times in a row. We repositioned to point directly into the wind and the problem went away.
4. FUEL SOV FAIL message during fueling. We are still trying to nail this down. Fueling on battery works no problems we just get this with the APU running.
5. Microwave broken. Just got replaced.
6. HUD FAIL message. Hud doesn't work after doing a database upgrade. After a reboot the HUD comes back online.
None of these issues were AOG and I've been able to address them when I'm in the vicinity of a service center. So, overall until now I've been happy with dispatch reliability.
The range and cabin comfort of the Praetor has been a game changer for me.
Avionics functionality for long trips (fuel planning and logging especially) is a big upgrade compared to G3000. The track balls of the Praetor are a big downgrade compared to the G3000 touch.

Thank you for your response I have only flown Phenoms myself. I do love the airplane but their does seem to be little anomalies that do occur, some re powering will clear just wondering if anyone knew with Citations have the same issues. My brother had a Challenger that had really no issues in 4 years

12-05-2024, 02:46 PM #23Thanks for this suggestion. Yes, I've been told fuel panel will do odd things if downwash lights are on. But, I understand you are not supposed to get SOV FAIL message. Perhaps that is incorrect info and indeed the cabin lights on can cause SOV fail?
Will be trying on the next fueling.
And, ha ha, turning off and on the cabin lights is always the last thing I learn about a new aircraft... -

I've had several FUEL SOV FAIL situations as well as spurious FLT CONTROL NO DISPATCH problems with my Praetor.
I've learned that the thing to do if I can't otherwise get them to clear, and before calling MX, is to disconnect both main ship batteries, wait 5 minutes, let the electrons relax, and re-connect the batteries. Even more than with the Phenoms, this technique in the Praetors is essential to know.
(Username Protected), I'm not saying that this necessarily lines up with the details of your issues, but it's an easy thing to do and worth keeping in mind. -

12-13-2024, 06:00 AM #25Thanks for the suggestion, (Username Protected)!
I do have the AMM for the battery disconnect but it it's multiple pages and even figuring out where the batteries are had me scratching my head. Granted, I haven't attempted it yet.
Any hints for a newbie on this? E.g. need x tool, batteries are located at Y and Z. Take of A panel and then disconnect B battery lead.

It turns out to be very easy to do the battery disconnect, and you don't need any tools.
Battery 1 is behind the co-pilot seat, and with a door that flips open into the aisle. So kneeling in the aisle behind the cockpit, you can flip that door open at floor level and you'll see the battery connect there.
Battery 2 is at floor level on the left side of the aircraft in the rear storage closet. Beside where the life raft is usually stored. That door is easy to pop open with 4 quick release twist nuts, and you'll see the battery connect there.
The battery connect / disconnects are big easy to turn knobs, and after a turn or two the connector will easily move free of the battery.
Just pull the connectors off of both batteries, wait 5 minutes. They are equally easy to reconnect. There are two guide posts, and just push the connector back on and turn the knob until tight.
This has saved me from AOGs in Gander and Shannon so far, and been useful several other times. -
