    ADS-B Traffic on G1000

Sharing this for those that are unaware: The G1000 in the Phenom 100 can display ADS-B traffic info received via the GTX 850. Augmenting TCAS data with ADS-B position reports gives better clarity to the traffic threats as ADS-B data includes directional information such course trends etc.

I have heard of some planes that had this setting enabled during their GTX-33ES ADS-B Out upgrade, but it does not appear to be officially supported configuration by Embraer. Per Contact Center they don’t have this “development in the current roadmap”. Note that it is unclear to me if enabling an already FAA approved feature technically makes the plane unairworthy…

To enable hold down the ENT key on PFD1 while powering on. Use the outer knob to go the GTS tab and then change “ADS-B TX” to “INSTALLED”. Power off. That’s it. You will start seeing some additional traffic icons, legend attached.

Separately but related, the GTX 850 can only receive ADS-B traffic on the 1090 MHz band. Smaller planes are allowed to use a different ADS-B standard called UAT 978 MHz, so the FAA has built a network of ground stations that will take 978 MHz position reports and retransmit them on 1090 MHz (and vice versa). They also include information from radar returns on non-ads-b planes. This feed, called ADS-R, is client-based service so your plane has to request it.

While in the PFD1 config mode, under the GTX tab set “1090 IN” to “ENABLED”. That will tell the ADS-B ground stations that you can receive data on 1090 MHz, and it will start sending you appropriate data.

Note: Enabling this last setting is also important if you fly with a portable ADS-B receiver with ForeFlight/Garmin Pilot etc, as otherwise you will not receive an ADS-R feed of non-ads-b planes making the traffic picture incomplete.

    A few thoughts:

    - I am unclear if the GTX 850 always used ADS-S data internally in its processing engine, and all this setting does is enabling the transmission of the information to the display. Anyone knows?

    - Let’s try to push Embraer to offer this as an official configuration as it adds tremendous value to the fleet. The hardware and software is installed, it is just a setting change.

    - Please share if you had this enabled by maintenance as part of the ADS-B upgrade, as it appears to have been inconstant.
